Back to School Beginning Sounds Activity
When school starts up in the fall, it is important to keep the activities fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate for students.
This back to school beginning sounds activity is a great way to help your students get into the routine of school, learn how to use technology, and practice identifying beginning sounds.
This activity can be used with Google Slides or Seesaw, so it is great for learning either at school or at home. It will help students learn letters and letter sounds as they match the correct initial sound to the picture card.
This back to school activity can be used with students in preschool or kindergarten all the way up to 2nd grade.

Learning Beginning Sounds
This back to school beginning sounds activity is very versatile and can be used in many ways to meet the needs of your students and schedule. With the activity being digital and requiring students to drag and drop the letter card into the box, it is a great option for:
- literacy centers
- small group word work
- independent practice
- early finisher work
- fine motor stations
- distance learning
This activity will help your students review and learn many skills. It is a great alphabet activity to help with letter recognition, letter sounds, beginning sounds, and practicing the fine motor skill of lining up the letter of the alphabet with the box on the screen.
You can also differentiate this to make it an appropriate activity for preschool through 2nd grade. To make it easier, you can complete the activity together whole group with guidance from the teacher. You can challenge students a little more by having them complete it in a small group or independently.
Since there are 30 slides, you can differentiate even further by only assigning a certain number of slides. The Seesaw activity includes two parts, each part having 15 slides. Assign one part at a time to make the activity easier or both parts for students who are ready for more.
I hope this back to school beginning sounds activity is a great addition to your lesson plans and is enjoyed by your students. Use this activity throughout the year to continue building those phonics skills.
